When I was a kid only old grandmas wore wigs. No one who wasn’t inching towards 100 years old would dare wear a wig unless it was part of a costume. Wig stood for Where Is Grandma. That was then. This is now. The wig is here, and I think it may be here for good. At least I hope so. For those who do not want to deal with their hair daily, a wig may be the way to go unless you are ready to cut it off. I spoke about that HERE.
Today’s wigs are not the synthetic messes of yesteryear. There are some high-quality human hair wigs of many different styles. They come in all textures and colors and are suitable for many occasions. Formal job interview, dinner party, or clubbin with the girls, you can have three different looks or the same. The fitting and blending today is so futuristic and high tech, you would think NASA designed it.
I have been custom fitting wigs for decades. I’m ready when you are. There is nothing to fear. If you don’t like it, take it off. That is the beauty of the wig. It gives you the ultimate versatility. This benefit, in addition to the numerous different looks that they help one manage to obtain makes wig wearing the ultimate flex of flexibility. Wigs also help to protect your natural hair. These reasons and many more are why so many people are wearing them. It is less expensive than cutting, weaving, and wearing hair as the follicles naturally come out of the head. There is now an art of wig making and wig wearing. There also is a plethora of options out there in the marketplace from which to choose. Have fun with it!
There are short term quick fix wigs. I compare these wigs to hats because they are relatively inexpensive. These wigs range from $30-$40 and are available at the local beauty supply store. Many times, they will tell you that the wigs are human hair, but they are not. They are synthetic hair at worst, or a blend at best. These wigs do not last long. They begin to shed and are difficult to restyle once the original style deteriorates from the wear and tear. This is why I compare them to a hat. A hat can be worn occasionally or daily. If you wear a hat daily, after a few weeks or months, it will no longer look as it did at the original purchase or wear date.
On the other end of the spectrum is the high-quality human hair wigs. These wigs can cost up to $2,000. The quality of the craftmanship and the integration of the hair follicles is unparalleled and amazing. These wigs last years. It is the difference between a mink or chinchilla fur coat and the faux fur (please don’t come for me PETA and animal lovers. I am simply making an analogy).
Most people who do want quality but are not looking to break the bank settle for the wigs in the middle of the pack. These wigs range from $300-$600. This will get one a decent quality wig. This type of wig is human hair of course. They come in various lengths, styles, colors. There are also different ways to apply wigs. Many people will not be able to tell that it is a wig. If you normally wear short hair and came into the job with one of these wigs on, the average person will believe that you had a weave installed. If you have long hair and come in with the short hair wig, they will believe that you chopped it all off. These wigs give you plenty of versatility. These wigs are my specialty. I have them to suit all occasions. Wigs in this price range are also the wigs that are normally used for medical reasons. Cancer patients going through chemotherapy as well as people suffering from alopecia (like Jada Pinkett) are normally referred to me to have wigs in this price range installed. I lost my mother and mother n law to breast cancer and lived through and witnessed their ordeals. I saw how their hair loss affected them emotionally and has made it my life’s work to help ease the pain and burden for other families.
Unbeknownst to many, insurance companies will cover the prosthetic wig when it is deemed medically necessary for the types of illnesses previously mentioned. All the traditional insurance carriers offer it as a medically needed benefit. It is not heavily advertised but it may be worth checking into it to see. If you need a wig as you go through chemotherapy, you already have enough stress going on and should not have to wonder how to budget for your hair.
Wigs have made a comeback and are here to stay for the foreseeable future. Covid helped expediate their arrival and even though many companies are now attempting to put the brakes on working for home and logging into Zoom meetings, people are still rocking the wigs. I have been a hairstylist for over two decades and back when I started, they were almost non-existent. Slowly but surely, they have become more popular and now are approximately 40% of the hair I sell. My forecast shows that number to increase greatly.
Regardless of if you order a wig from me, or someone else, please do your due diligence and make sure you are comparing apples and oranges. Make sure that it is human hair that will not irritate the skin in the manner that synthetic hair tends to do. Also ensure that you are given directions on how to properly care for and maintain your unit when it is applied to your head and when it is off your head. Maintenance is the key to longevity with most hair. If you decide that a wig is not in your future, I still am available for short cuts and weaves!
